Barend Jacobus Burgers was born on the 22nd of April 1970 in Pretoria, where he currently resides.

After matriculating in Pietersburg, Northern Province, Barend studied at the University of Pretoria where he was awarded a Baccalareus Legum Civilium (BLC) degree in 1991 and a Baccalareus Legum (LLB) degree in 1993.

During 1994 and 1995 Barend studied at the University of Augsburg in Germany after having been granted a full bursary by the German Academic Exchange Service and was awarded a Magister Legum (LLM) degree in August 1995.

Upon his return to South Africa Barend worked for a short period as a public prosecutor at Ellisras, during which time Barend completed a certificate course in constitutional litigation, whereafter he entered into a contract of articles with Schoeman Attorneys in Pietersburg.

While attending the second night school of the School for Practical Legal Training in Pretoria during 1998, Barend also worked as a legal advisor for Redstar Networks (Pty) Ltd. Barend was awarded the Certificate for Best Overall Performance during the said night school together with certificates for outstanding performance in the following subjects:

• Commercial Litigation
• Insolvency Procedures
• Legal Accountancy
• Labour Dispute Resolution

During October 1998 Barend represented the night school in Juta’s National Litigation Competition and was awarded the 1st prize as winner of the competition in February 1999. Barend was finally admitted as an attorney on the 17th of June 1999.
